Road & Track just ran a very favorable comparo for the 228i, if you can get the M Sport package (IIRC)

228i. One of the guys I go to school with bought one with the M track pack, meaning it has the m235i brakes and suspension. Cool car. Very quick.

I imagine the 4 series is heavier?

I had a 228i as a loaner once, not a bad car. Didn’t drive as well as my one though, going from hydraulic power steering to electric power steering is very noticeable. Maybe my problem was I stepped out of my M3 and into it. That said, I’d go for the 428i, I think it 228i is kinda ugly.

I just recently saw my first 228 in person. Wow. I’m not really a BMW guy but they did a great job designing it.

4 series just looks a little too long.

Same engine, same amount of seats, one is smaller and lighter. Is that right?

If so, definitely the 228.

I think that could go to either. The 228i is like the hot girl that looks hot when she’s just keeping it casual in jeans and a hoodie. The 428i is like the bombshell in a Vera evening gown. Really can’t go wrong eith either on that.

Do they enjoy carrying people often in the rear seats? 428i.

Do they not want to carry people, always ends up carrying people, and don’t feel like telling people no? 228i. The cheap-asses will get tired of the small rear area and start providing their own damn transportation.

428i. 2-Series is the cheapest BMW they sell. You’re working at a dealer, you might want to project a 4-Series look.

Oddly, the M2 is not much lighter than the m4. But the weight difference with the smaller engine would be exacerbated.

Probably the best driver’s BMW made right now is the M2, which means that if you aren’t in a position to get that for whatever reason any 2-series with handling options is going to be better than anything else. So 228 over 428 for sure.

Oooh, unless you mean 428 GC. That’s a sexy beast. Not really a coupe of course, but I love the lines.

The 228i’s looks are significantly helped by a blacked out grill and the M-sport front fascia. I am not a big fan of the normal front fascia, but the sport one makes it much nicer.

When I traded 300ZX for MR2 I traded considerable cabin room for some sharpness. No more just tossing things on the back seats, no more carrying items longer than a meter. My opinion is that, for most people, the room is not necessary except very rarely. Moving house, buying furniture etc. Maybe not so if you have a family, but I do think people are driving much bigger cars than they have any need for.

And the sharpness of the MR2 is divine. It wants to change direction!

I agree, I figured i’d quickly sell my 328i after I got my 335i, but instead I want to keep them both because I really like them both. The 328i doesn't even have the sport package, yet it's still enjoyable to drive.

You can fit 4 adults in the 4 series, and it still handles pretty well. IMO looks better (gotta mod it though) and it's probably what I would pick, but only as a 435i 6mt M-sport. Honestly I'd just get a nice CPO E92 335is. Will be better than both.

I agree. It helps that the N52 is a fantastic engine. If I can find an M-sport E91 328i with a 6 speed, I’m gonna sell the C300 and 328i for it.

I’ve also been toying with the idea of building an E91 M3 (minus the engine... Maybe)

I disliked the way the 228i drove. I haven’t driven a 4 series but the 228 had a Malibu-like throttle response and I found the turbo to be very non turbo like. I didn’t find the car thrilling at all. The whole less weight argument is kind null on this question I think. It’s not a sport sedan. It looks like one, it’s marketed like one, but it drives like an economy car. A German rwd economy car.

Whatever that gets you into a car with a 35i at the end. The I-6 is the one you want and it will boost like crazy too. If the option is only between those two go for the 2 series it looks better and is better proportioned.

128i is what I would build. Lower entry cost, N52 is awesome, and 1M/M3 handling stuff bolts right up. Down the road you can swap in the M5 V10 engine if that’s your cup of tea.

I’d take a base 228i because the 2016 models have most of the features from the sport line that was available as an option. I’ve driven both, and I liked the 228i way more than the 428i. Although the 4 Series is remarkable, the 2 Series is more fun in a package that isn’t really much smaller on the inside. The M235i is a great alternative to the 428i, but the ride is firmer. The 228i will be enough for most drivers though.

(semi-serious) My E36 compact has two doors, a roundel, just enough power and has cost me less than $100 in maintenence in the year I’ve owned it(oil changes and one hose that decided to disintegrate).$4000 for a good one would leave a lot of room for more toys if you have a 4 series budget.
